Vietnam’s birding sites range from lowland evergreen forest and dry dipterocarp woodland to montane plateaus, limestone karst, wetlands and coastal mudflats. Southern and central Vietnam are generally most productive from December to April, while higher mountains in northern Vietnam are often best from March to May.
Sa Pa and the Fansipan massif provide Vietnam's strongest taste of Sino-Himalayan birdlife. Around 350 species have been recorded in the wider area, including several montane birds that are scarce or absent elsewhere in the country.
Tam Dao National Park is a convenient montane birding site close to Hanoi, with lowland evergreen forest on the lower slopes and cooler montane forest at higher elevations. Its accessibility makes it a useful first or final stop on a northern Vietnam bird
Cuc Phuong, Vietnam's oldest national park, protects extensive limestone forest about 135 km south-west of Hanoi. The forest has a distinctive karst character, with mature trees, caves, steep limestone terrain and a rich flora.
